The Society, whose main aims are to increase the public knowledge and enjoyment of the Yorkshire Dales whilst also preserving its condition, landscape and natural beauty, has been celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2006. While the members of the Society have rightly celebrated their achievements over the last quarter of a century, they have also chosen to look forward, aiming for bigger and better things in the years to come. The move from their old offices in Otley has placed the Society right in the middle of its area of interest. The founders and current joint secretaries, Colin and Fleur Speakman, feel that even though the move has been a logistical minefield at times, it will help to raise the profile of the Society in its work to promote and protect the Yorkshire Dales. Colin summed this up, saying that while based in Otley, “we were sometimes seen as being too far away from the Dales to make a real difference. Now that our office is in the heart of this wonderful part of Yorkshire, we are looking forward to gaining stronger links with the local communities, the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority and other organisations working towards similar aims.” With the move, the Society is now looking to increase its membership base and to find volunteers to assist with administration in the office and other work.
